Undocumented Immigrant Charged with Assaulting Federal Officer in Texas
Recently, an undocumented immigrant was charged in Texas for allegedly assaulting a federal officer. The Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed on Thursday that Gelson López Sanchez, a 28-year-old from Honduras, is facing three counts related to the incident.
The events unfolded on December 1, 2025, when a federal immigration officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle registered to López Sanchez, which was carrying at least five occupants. Allegedly, López Sanchez reversed his vehicle, striking the officer who was positioned behind it.
The indictment, filed on January 14, provided images of a Chevrolet Silverado, the vehicle involved. Interestingly, it was noted that this truck was loaded with heavy equipment and a ladder.
According to the DOJ, López Sanchez’s actions seemed deliberate; he managed to steer around vehicles of law enforcement, perhaps trying to evade arrest. It was emphasized that multiple federal agents were present in vehicles clearly marked with police insignia and badges.
Following the attempted escape, law enforcement initiated a pursuit with activated lights. López Sanchez, while being chased, approached two ICE agents in a Chrysler van, evidently refusing to brake as he veered into oncoming traffic. The vehicle crashed into the van, causing notable damage and deploying its airbags.
After approximately ten minutes of flight, López Sanchez halted the vehicle in a median and fled the scene with his passengers on foot.
The indictment described the way López Sanchez used the Silverado as constitutive of a “deadly and dangerous weapon” likely capable of causing severe injury or even death.
As of now, López Sanchez has not been apprehended. The DOJ is urging anyone who might possess information leading to his arrest to reach out to the FBI, noting that those who do might be eligible for a reward.
If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison for each count.
