Texas Officer Killed in Duty

Authorities report that a police officer in Texas lost his life while attempting to apprehend a fugitive. Officer Elijah Garretson, 27, originally from New Hampshire, was shot on January 10 while trying to detain a suspect involved in organized crime and who had failed to appear in court. Texas State Senator Pete Flores, who represents the area, shared details via a social media post.

Garretson, along with two other officers, confronted Jamison Cavazos, 26, during the arrest attempt, which escalated into a physical altercation. Reports indicate that Cavazos shot Garretson and subsequently fled. He later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a prolonged negotiation as officers approached him at a different location. Authorities recovered two handguns from him.

Sadly, despite being rushed to a hospital, Garretson did not survive his injuries. Senator Flores remarked, “This police officer risked his life to protect public safety and paid the ultimate price. This loss is a tragic reminder of the courageous sacrifices our nation’s law enforcement officers face every day.”

The Texas Rangers are currently investigating the incident.

Officer Garretson had a commendable background—he grew up in New Hampshire, served in the U.S. Army, and held the rank of sergeant before retiring in June 2024. After his military service, he pursued a career in law enforcement, graduating from the police academy with honors in June 2025. He was recognized for saving the life of a fellow cadet who went into cardiac arrest.

He is survived by his wife and their five-year-old daughter. The Copperas Cove Police Department has not yet issued a comment regarding the tragedy.

In a statement, the New Hampshire State Police expressed condolences, saying, “During this difficult time, our thoughts are with his loved ones, our colleagues at the Copperas Cove Police Department, and everyone affected by this tragedy. He will never be forgotten.”
