DHS Arrests Man After Assaulting Immigration Officer in Minneapolis
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced late Wednesday that a man in Minneapolis had been arrested for assaulting a federal immigration officer while armed with a firearm and a box of ammunition.
This incident took place mere hours after another DHS employee was attacked with a shovel by an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela. In the aftermath, the assailant was shot in the leg, leading to riots erupting in the city soon after.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin shared with Fox News Digital, “During last night’s riots in Minneapolis, an American citizen was arrested for assaulting a police officer while armed.” She noted that, “The individual came to the protest with a gun and a box of ammunition in his bag,” adding, “He directed threats towards law enforcement officials.”
“After police implemented crowd control measures, the individual kicked a metal flare at an officer, subsequently pushing the officer before being arrested on suspicion of assault,” McLaughlin detailed. “During the arrest, he claimed to be armed, which was confirmed when a firearm and ammunition were discovered. Notably, he did not possess a concealed carry permit. This incident definitely does not reflect a peaceful protest under the First Amendment.”
Minneapolis is currently facing heightened tensions as federal law enforcement officers engage with rioters amid ongoing unrest. The violence escalated following the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, who was killed during a confrontation with ICE agents in the city last week.
In a separate but related event, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem labeled the deceased woman a “domestic terrorist,” asserting that she used her vehicle as a weapon while obstructing ICE agents.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey openly criticized ICE during a press conference about Good’s death, declaring, “You need to get out of Minneapolis.” Additionally, Governor Tim Walz expressed his disapproval on social media after viewing the related video, criticizing DHS and suggesting it was part of a “propaganda machine.”
On Thursday, President Donald Trump hinted he might invoke the Insurrection Act if Minnesotans continue to disregard the law and pose risks to federal personnel. He stated on Truth Social, “If we want to stop Minnesota’s corrupt politicians and professional agitators from targeting ICE personnel who are simply doing their jobs, I will enact the Insurrection Act, just as many presidents have done before, to restore order in our once-great state.”
This act, originally enacted in 1807, would permit the deployment of the National Guard to help stabilize the region and curb the violence.
