Boopy Miller’s Dramatic Buzzer-Beater Leads SMU to Narrow Win
On Wednesday night, Boopy Miller, a senior guard for SMU, delivered a breathtaking buzzer-beater to clinch a tight victory against Virginia Tech in ACC play.
The Hokies seemed poised for victory in the dying seconds, but Miller’s half-court jumper changed everything. After catching a full-court inbounds pass, he weaved past a defender and took the crucial shot.
Miller, who had been averaging 20.8 points and 7.9 assists this season, added a stunning 24 points to his tally in SMU’s 77-76 win, much to the delight of the enthusiastic home crowd.
Coach Andy Enfield discussed the final play strategy, emphasizing the plan to get the ball to Miller. “Let’s get the ball to Whoopee, and we went with it,” he shared after the game.
Miller expressed his certainty about the outcome of his shot as soon as he released the ball. “I missed too many free throws,” he remarked, “so I knew it was coming in.” His teammate, Samet Igotoglu, humorously affirmed his confidence in Miller’s clutch play, saying, “Hmm…yeah,” while chuckling.
In other noteworthy news, John Blackwell’s last-minute shot propelled Wisconsin past Minnesota.
Enfield revealed that Miller had recently battled the flu, which took a toll on his weight. “His body was incredible,” Enfield noted, adding that the strength coach had helped Miller gain 10 pounds of muscle during the offseason. “It’s impressive he played 35 minutes; it speaks volumes about who he is as a player and a person. He wanted to be out there,” Enfield praised.
SMU’s win marked their second victory against an ACC opponent, lifting their record to 13 wins and 4 losses. The Mustangs entered the game on a two-game losing streak.
Next up, SMU will compete against Virginia State on Saturday.
