Nebraska Grandmother’s Unexpected Windfall on 91st Birthday
A Nebraska grandmother, Lois Jurgens, celebrated her 91st birthday with a remarkable surprise, making $32,000 from a rare item that had been left on her doorstep for four decades.
Initially, Jurgens planned to sell some of her vintage items at a garage sale, thinking they wouldn’t fetch much—maybe around $50. But shortly after, Brammer Auction and Realty announced an upcoming antique sale, prompting her to consider other options.
Despite Ken Bramer, the auction house owner, being hesitant at first about the large collection Jurgens had, he visited her home just before the auction. Amid the snowfall and leaves, he discovered the rare piece, which had remained untouched on her balcony. It was then that Bramer noticed a blue butterfly pattern on the back, which hinted at its significant value.
This particular item was uniquely marked with two stamps that are seldom found on such collectibles, making it especially appealing to collectors. Surprisingly, Jurgens estimated it might only be worth around $100. However, Bramer found that estimation amusing, knowing it was worth much more.
Yet, Jurgens couldn’t be present for the auction due to her birthday celebrations and volunteering commitments. By the time she arrived at the auction site, intense bidding had already taken place among enthusiastic collectors from nearby states.
“We definitely exceeded $100,” Bramer joked after the event.
After the auction, Bramer informed Jurgens about the $32,000 sale price, which left her thrilled yet overwhelmed, humorously mentioning how her knees felt weak from the excitement. She later shared with a friend that selling the old piece was the highlight of her long life.
