Charles Wall appointed as deputy director of ICE following Sheahan's resignation

New Deputy Director for ICE Announced

On Thursday, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem shared via X that Charles Wall, a veteran attorney with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will take on the role of deputy director. This appointment comes as enforcement actions are set to increase nationwide.

“Effective immediately, Charles Wall will serve as Deputy Director of @ICEGov,” Noem stated. She highlighted Wall’s previous role as ICE’s Chief General Counsel, where he significantly contributed to apprehending and removing serious criminal illegal aliens from U.S. communities last year.

Wall succeeds Madison Sheehan, who resigned earlier the same day to focus on a candidacy for the Ohio House. Her resignation marks a transitional period for ICE, especially given the rising opposition to enforcement actions and the mounting threats against field officers.

This change is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to toughen immigration enforcement against serious offenders, such as murderers and gang members, who are in the U.S. without legal status. However, there are ongoing efforts from sanctuary jurisdictions and activist groups aiming to counteract ICE’s actions.

ICE officials noted that Wall has over a decade of experience within the agency. “Mr. Wall has been an ICE attorney for 14 years and possesses a strategic mindset necessary for prioritizing the removal of serious criminals from our country,” Noem mentioned.

Prior to this appointment, Wall was the Chief Legal Counsel for ICE, overseeing a large team of attorneys and providing legal guidance to senior leadership.

DHS indicated that Wall has been with ICE since 2012 and that his previous experience includes a senior consulting role in New Orleans.

This leadership transition aligns with the administration’s focus on public safety priorities, particularly as ICE has attracted nationwide attention following protests in Minneapolis linked to an incident involving ICE on January 7.

Administration officials emphasized that while ICE remains committed to targeting the most dangerous criminal illegal aliens, local resistance and political challenges are heightening risks for officers involved in enforcement operations.

ICE has also established a dedicated webpage displaying information on these serious offenders by name and nationality.

“I look forward to working with him in his new position to enhance safety in America,” Noem concluded. ICE has yet to provide further comments on this development.
