Trinidad Chambliss Sues NCAA Over Eligibility Denial
Trinidad Chambliss, the quarterback for Ole Miss, is taking legal action against the NCAA after being denied a sixth year of eligibility. Reports indicate that his attorneys are seeking a preliminary injunction from a Mississippi judge to allow him to compete for one more season.
The NCAA rejected Chambliss’ request on January 9, stating that he and his team didn’t adequately show he had a “disabling injury or illness” that prevented him from playing in 2022, attributing his absence to a respiratory issue.
According to the NCAA, in November, Ole Miss submitted a waiver request for a five-year extension of eligibility for Chambliss because of a significant health issue. However, the approval hinges on presenting medical documentation from the time of his reported illness, which they failed to do.
The organization noted, “Documents supplied by Ole Miss and Chambliss’ previous school included a doctor’s note from December 2022 that confirmed he was in ‘very good condition’ after being examined in August 2022.” Additionally, there was no record of any medical treatment or condition during the 2022-23 season. The school cited “developmental needs and team competitive environment” as reasons for his non-participation, leading to the waiver’s denial.
Keith Carter, Ole Miss’ athletic director, expressed disappointment regarding the NCAA’s decision and stated that an appeal will be filed at the committee level. He also mentioned ongoing collaboration with their Trinidadian representatives for any further assistance.
Chambliss’ attorney released a statement hinting at the potential for a lawsuit, emphasizing the need for a fair review of Chambliss’ rights by the Mississippi State Judiciary rather than officials who might not have the athlete’s best interests in mind. “Whether or not to pursue that course of action is something only Trinidad and his parents can decide,” he added.
The legal team plans to bring the case to court, aiming to ensure Chambliss can play through the 2026 season.
The NCAA did not provide additional comments beyond their January 9 statement in response to inquiries regarding the lawsuit.
In related news, Ole Miss narrowly lost to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on January 8, with a final score of 31-27, missing out on advancing in the NCAA playoffs.
