Bo Horvat Stays Back During Road Trip

CALGARY, Alberta — The Islanders had initially intended for Bo Horvat to join the team on their seven-game road trip, which is now unfolding in Calgary on Saturday afternoon. However, it seems the current plan is for him to remain in New York for the entire trip.

After Friday’s practice, general manager Mathieu Darche shared with the media that Horvat’s recovery from a lower-body injury won’t be hindered. He is currently skating alone in New York. Given that it was unlikely he would play in Vancouver or Seattle, it doesn’t really make sense for him to travel out west just to deal with a complicated game and practice schedule.

Darche mentioned that Horvat has been skating for around three days and there’s hope he might be ready to return when the Islanders play against the Sabers back home on January 24—though, of course, there’s no certainty.

If this were the playoffs, it might be a different story, but the Islanders can afford to be cautious right now, and they seem to be taking full advantage of that. It’s still expected that Horvat will return before the Olympic break, and there’s no immediate risk to his participation with Team Canada in the Milan Olympics.

Fans are recalling John Tavares’ knee injury during the Sochi Olympics, which understandably raises concerns about Horvat facing another injury while in Italy. However, it’s considered unlikely that he or any other player will miss the Olympic opportunity due to injuries, even though there are lingering uncertainties surrounding the ice conditions at Milan’s Santa Giulia Arena.

Meanwhile, Tony DeAngelo reflected on past team changes while recalling when the Rangers sent a letter to fans about a significant shake-up. As a younger player at that time, he observed how the team successfully navigated the transition.

“I was fortunate to be there during a pivotal time,” he shared, adding that the team ended up gaining valuable assets and made it to the conference finals. “It’s encouraging to hear about renovations happening now, but I think everything will turn out well.”

On another note, David Rittich will be starting in net for the Islanders against the Flames on Saturday.
