The Book of Mormon Temporarily Closed for Repairs
Broadway’s famous musical, “The Book of Mormon,” is shutting down until May 17th for necessary repairs after a fire incident. The show had to be put on hold following the event.
All performances are canceled until Sunday, May 17th. Those who have purchased tickets for the affected shows will receive notifications through their original point of purchase, offering options for refunds or rescheduling.
“ATG Entertainment and The Book of Mormon are currently collaborating with a team of industry experts to initiate the required repairs to the building,” a joint statement from the organizations noted on Wednesday. They expressed gratitude towards the firefighters and emergency personnel for their prompt and courageous response.
A fire that broke out in the electrical room on May 4 caused considerable damage to the Eugene O’Neill Theater, according to Deputy Chief David Sims of the New York City Fire Department. The specifics of the fire’s cause remain unknown. The statement added that the Fire Department was contacted right away and arrived within minutes, effectively extinguishing the flames.
Damage was primarily restricted to the fourth floor and a rear room housing light fixtures and chandeliers, though there was also some water damage reported.
“The Book of Mormon” stands as one of Broadway’s longest-running productions, having been performed over 5,000 times since its debut at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in 2011.
Established in 1925, the theater is rich in history and has been the stage for various productions like “Sweeney Todd,” a new interpretation of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and the rock musical “Spring Awakening.”
