White House Critiques Governor Newsom Following ICE Incident
The White House has sharply criticized the remarks from California Governor Gavin Newsom about recent shootings involving ICE agents. Newsom initially referred to the agents as engaging in “state-sponsored terrorism,” a statement that has since been retracted.
White House press secretary Abigail Jackson condemned Newsom’s comments. She characterized him as someone eager to garner attention by attacking ICE agents, only to backtrack when faced with the consequences of those remarks. “He just says what he thinks will get him headlines,” Jackson remarked, emphasizing her criticism of Newsom’s approach.
This response came after Newsom’s podcast remarks in which he distanced himself from his previous comments made after the January 7 shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis. There, he echoed the sentiment that the incident was state-sponsored terrorism. The retraction has drawn both scrutiny and support from various political circles.
In the podcast, Newsom spoke with conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, who challenged him on the inflammatory connections his office made between ICE and terrorism. Newsom acknowledged that linking ICE agents to terrorists was not accurate, stating, “Our ICE agents are clearly not terrorists.” He seemed to express some regret about the rhetoric that escalates political tensions.
Following the shooting, which federal authorities describe as a response to Good allegedly using his vehicle as a weapon, discussions have intensified regarding the role and conduct of federal immigration officials. The incident has ignited divisive opinions, particularly among Democrats who heightened their criticism of ICE.
While Newsom supports certain collaborations with federal immigration enforcement, he has resisted calls from some Democrats to “defund ICE.” He mentioned that he did not agree with such extreme measures, recalling similar positions taken during previous campaigns. Newsom ultimately advocates for comprehensive immigration reform as a solution for the issues tied to ICE’s current setup.
President Trump has routinely criticized Newsom’s immigration policies, claiming that they compromise border security and overall public safety. In contrast, Newsom defended California’s stance as cooperative with immigration authorities, claiming that it possibly facilitates more ICE removals than any other state.
As tensions rise, Newsom’s office has come under fire from critics, including Trump’s administration, which has attributed escalated threats against immigration enforcement to the rhetoric employed by Democratic leaders. “The language of the Democrats has led to this environment,” Jackson noted, citing the surge in violence against federal officers.
Furthermore, recent statistics from the Department of Homeland Security suggest a sharp increase in assaults against ICE officers, highlighting the tension surrounding immigration enforcement. These developments have not only sparked protests in cities like Minneapolis but have also raised significant concerns about safety and policy reform.
