Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary: Travel Plans in Full Swing

This year is quite significant as the United States gears up to celebrate its 250th anniversary, and many families are already mapping out their vacations for 2026. It’s hard to believe it’s almost here, right?

The American Automobile Association (AAA) is shining a light on various events happening across the nation, kicking off with celebrations in Philadelphia. They’re really encouraging travelers to think ahead.

“We suggest that people pinpoint the events they wish to attend and the places they want to explore, and book early,” a AAA representative mentioned this week. It sounds like solid advice, especially when… you know, last-minute plans can get tricky.

There’s a particular emphasis on not delaying travel arrangements, particularly around the Fourth of July weekend, which historically draws a lot of travelers. The Wawa Welcome America Festival, for example, is a 16-day event running from June 19 to July 4.

Philadelphia is set to host various exciting activities, including concerts at Independence Mall, fireworks shows, block parties, and the beloved Wawa Hoagie Day. It promises to be a fantastic time.

Another notable spot is the Museum of the American Revolution (MAR) in Philadelphia, which documents the Declaration of Independence and its influence beyond U.S. borders. Pretty intriguing, right?

Just outside Augusta, Georgia, is Meadow Gardens, the historic residence of George Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This site has been open to the public since 1901 and is included in AAA’s America 250 list. There’s even a special “Write Like a Signer” activity for kids to try out quill writing.

In Boston, the Emerson Colonial Theater is showcasing the historic opera “The Regiment’s Daughter,” based on Deborah Sampson, the Massachusetts woman who pretended to be a man in order to fight in the Revolutionary War. It all sounds like such a rich tapestry of history.

Meanwhile, AAA is highlighting three significant events in Washington, D.C., which is a great place to dig into 250 years of history. An AI exhibit titled “The American Story” at the National Archives Museum is among the noteworthy attractions. The illumination of the Washington Monument has already marked the beginning of the year’s celebrations, adding extra sparkle to the National Mall.

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is on the horizon, running from June 18 to July 12, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History has some captivating exhibitions related to the Declaration as well.

What’s interesting is the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in Alexandria, Virginia, will share the story of former manager Hannah Griffiths, who ran a coffeehouse from 1785 to the early 1800s, showing the critical role women played during the Revolutionary War.

Virginia also holds the First Baptist Church of Williamsburg, founded for freed enslaved African Americans in 1776. This congregation stood as a beacon of resilience during challenging times, which is a poignant reminder of the struggles faced.

One of the standout events on the East Coast and Gulf Coast will be Sail250, showcasing an international fleet of tall ships and naval vessels in cities like New Orleans, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, and Boston, along with parades and fireworks.

Rosie Rios, chair of the America 250 Committee, emphasized, “It’s vital for folks to see themselves in this commemoration and feel inspired about the future of our country.” It’s an inspiring thought, isn’t it? Taking a moment to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed.

Congress set up the American Bicentennial Commission in 2016 to orchestrate planning for the 250th anniversary, and Rios continues to lead the charge, carrying the weight of this historic celebration.
