Chris D’Elia Talks Comedy Fallout and Industry Reactions
Chris D’Elia is making waves in the comedy scene, expressing his feelings of being cast aside by the industry. The 45-year-old comedian recently shared his reflections on how sexual misconduct allegations in 2020 disrupted his career.
During a podcast episode with Jack Osbourne and Ryan Drexler, D’Elia remarked on the surprising reaction from friends and fellow comedians after the scandal broke. The host asked him if he was taken aback by the lack of support from those he had known for years. “I was a little surprised. Comedians too… I thought community was important… but I guess that’s not the case. A lot of comedians are, well, a bit short,” he said.
D’Elia elaborated, expressing concern over the quick judgment he encountered, noting that many in the industry feel the pressure to uphold certain standards. “They’ve felt ostracized for so long, and finally, with laughter, they get some recognition. It’s like they can’t let go of that,” he explained, suggesting that if that’s what being a comedian involves, he might consider stepping away from that identity.
He reflected on the nature of judgment in the arts community, lamenting a tendency to hastily tear people down. “I was shocked, yeah. You find that you can’t wait for the hate to come… It’s surprising, and yet that’s just the way people are,” he said. “What I know about people in arts is, they’re cool, but so are others.”
The podcast continued with a discussion about addiction and public perception. D’Elia agreed with Osbourne’s points about the judgment that comes with various addictions, sharing insights that the timing of his allegations coincided with a turbulent period—COVID-19 and social unrest—which only heightened the fear and silence that many in the entertainment industry felt.
“2020 was a wild time… Everything began with COVID, then there was social turmoil, and people were afraid to express any opinions. That’s when everything unraveled for me,” he recounted, reflecting on how the societal climate impacted his circumstances.
D’Elia acknowledged his past wrongdoings, linking them to his struggles with addiction. “I was a really bad liar and exploited situations… Looking back now, age plays a role. At 45, I see things differently. I never thought the consequences would catch up to me, but in hindsight, I realize how delusional I was,” he admitted.
These comments come amidst a backdrop of serious legal issues from his past. In March 2021, a federal lawsuit accused him of sexual exploitation of minors, alleging he solicited explicit images from a 17-year-old girl on social media in 2014.
The lawsuit claimed that after connecting with D’Elia online, the accuser was pressured into sending multiple explicit photos and videos. While his representation denied the allegations at the time, the lawsuit was eventually withdrawn by the plaintiff.
Since these events, D’Elia has largely stepped back from the public eye, maintaining a low profile.
