Irish town 'stunned' after thousands of live crabs spill from overturned truck

Crab Chaos on the Highway

An Irish man named Odum McLaughlin found himself in a rather chaotic situation after a transport truck carrying live crabs overturned on a highway. “I was shocked,” McLaughlin shared later on a radio program.

The incident unfolded on January 12, when McLaughlin, who owns McLaughlin’s Car Dismantlers and Recovery, received a call about the overturned truck in County Donegal. Initially, he didn’t think much of it; just another day in the transportation business, right?

However, the situation took a strange turn when they learned the vehicle was loaded with 15,000 live crabs trying desperately to escape into the Atlantic, only about 40 feet away from the crash site. The truck was headed to a restaurant in Portugal, carrying approximately $97,000 worth of crabs sourced by Irish fishermen.

While the driver emerged unscathed, the container with the crabs burst open, providing the creatures a chance to make a break for it. “It looked like they were trying to get back to where they were,” McLaughlin recalled.

Following the accident, Donegal County Council promptly closed the road to facilitate extensive recovery efforts.

When McLaughlin arrived at the scene, he noted the frenzy. It was a bit overwhelming, to say the least. Not wanting to tackle the task alone, he reached out to nearby villages like Burnfoot and Greencastle, rallying an army of volunteers to assist in the operation.

After about 18 hours of hard work, around 80 volunteers—men, women, and children—managed to round up the crabs, collecting them in sandbags and using a crane to lift them back into containers. Although several crabs did not survive the accident, many others were successfully rescued.

“Everyone in the village came to help,” McLaughlin expressed, clearly moved by the community’s support. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.”

The good news? The truck driver wasn’t injured and nearly 95 percent of the crabs were recovered. But, and this is a significant but—it was not the happy ending one might hope for.

After the rescue efforts, McLaughlin learned the disappointing news that all the crabs would have to be disposed of, as they were deemed unfit for human consumption following the incident. Understandably, he’s feeling quite frustrated.
