Ian Jackson Shines in St. John’s Game Against Villanova
PHILADELPHIA — Last night, Ian Jackson gave a hint of the player Rick Pitino envisioned when he recruited him as a point guard. This is becoming somewhat of a recurring theme for the sophomore guard.
During Saturday’s matchup between St. John’s and Villanova at Xfinity Mobile Arena, Jackson scored 18 points, hitting a season-high seven field goals. This performance marked a significant highlight as he adjusts to the point guard position after transferring from North Carolina State.
In addition to his scoring, Jackson contributed two assists and two steals, although he also had three turnovers. Pitino praised him post-game, acknowledging his ability to adapt as they progress deeper into Big East play.
“Adjusting at this level is tough for someone who hasn’t played that position before,” Pitino remarked. “But Ian is doing exceptionally well. In fact, it’s better than I expected.”
This performance was a notable step forward for Jackson. After being thrust into the starting role in mid-December, he has scored in double figures in seven out of ten games since.
There seems to be no shot Jackson shies away from, with Pitino lightheartedly commenting on his confidence. In the first half against the Wildcats, he made all three of his attempts, finishing with seven points despite being sidelined for a while due to personal fouls.
Entering the game with an average of 10.2 points, Jackson added more to the scoreboard at the start of the second half, helping St. John’s establish a lead despite Villanova’s attempts to come back.
“I’m feeling good,” Jackson said. “I think performances like this reflect our preparation—knowing how the opposing team will defend and what spaces we can exploit.”
Pitino described the atmosphere in the St. John’s locker room during halftime, when Villanova led by just one point, as charged. He mentioned it was the first instance in his coaching career where he got into a heated discussion with star player Zubby Ejiofor.
“I’ve only really confronted two players in my career,” Pitino shared. “One was Billy Donovan during a UAB game, and tonight, I just sensed something about Zuby. But the uneasy feeling goes away quickly for me.”
Ejiofor finished the game with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, despite missing five free throws earlier.
Oziya Sellers, who scored a season-high 24 points against Marquette just days prior, struggled this time, scoring only nine points, with no contributions during the first half.
During halftime, Villanova recognized its 2015-16 national championship team, featuring video messages from Knicks players Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart, who were unable to attend in person.
Pitino noted that guard Joeson Sanon had a quiet game but still made two critical three-pointers in the second half. “I’ve never worried about Johnson,” Pitino mentioned. “He played well defensively tonight; he’s a talented player, and I know he’ll show what he’s capable of.”
