Socialists Mobilize in NYC Against Immigration Enforcement

Activists in New York City are coming together, rallying over 4,000 individuals to create an “immediate response” group aimed at countering federal immigration enforcement actions anticipated in the city.

As reported recently, during a monthly meeting of a group associated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a leader known as Marina highlighted what she characterized as the harmful objectives of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. She mentioned that, “As we’ve seen in other cities, we still expect a wave of federal immigration enforcement.” It seems there’s a lot of concern regarding the federal government’s approach to immigration issues.

Marina also expressed that things could feel chaotic, perhaps even intimidating, for many New Yorkers in the coming days. “But we want to be at the forefront when it happens,” she stated to a gathering of more than 100 people.

The NYC DSA chapter has reportedly trained 2,000 of its members and an additional 2,000 who are not members. They’re also looking to add around 50 more trainers to their ranks, all while ensuring their ICE hotline operates around the clock.

There’s a particular call for multilingual volunteers to assist immigrants who have crossed into New York from distant countries. “If you speak Pula, Creole, or Fulani, come find us,” Marina encouraged, emphasizing the importance of community support.

The organization hasn’t specified funding needs but has repeatedly requested donations during meetings. It seems there’s a sense of urgency for resources.

Interestingly, some young activists expressed a bizarre sense of enthusiasm regarding the recent death of Renee Good, a woman killed by ICE agents during an incident in Minneapolis. Good had been involved with the anti-ICE movement, which advocates resisting immigration enforcement—a model the NYC group is drawing inspiration from.

The plan, similar to tactics used in Minneapolis, involves large gatherings at known ICE operation sites, using loud whistles to distract immigration officers as they enforce federal laws. DSA is actively reaching out to neighborhoods like Chinatown, Bushwick, and Jackson Heights to recruit participants.

When the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will initiate a significant crackdown in New York City remains uncertain, but it has plans underway. Previously announced efforts involved the arrest of individuals deemed the “worst of the worst” among illegal aliens, which included those convicted of severe crimes like murder and child assault.

In a related move, DHS is set to open a new ICE facility capable of housing 1,500 undocumented immigrants in Chester, approximately an hour away from New York City, substantially increasing local detention capacity.
