Florida County Achieves Remarkable Safety Milestone
In a surprising turn of events, St. Johns County in Florida has completed 2025 without recording a single homicide. This county, which includes the historic city of St. Augustine and has a population exceeding 300,000, stands out among the nation’s 100 largest counties for this achievement.
County Sheriff Robert Hardwick shared that while their accomplishments deserve recognition, they’re often kept understated. “Sometimes we whisper because we don’t want to take our accomplishments for granted,” he remarked, noting, “We are truly blessed.”
Interestingly, two incidents involved fatal shootings, but those were classified as officer-involved, and thus they’re not categorized as homicides. There was only one criminal homicide in the previous year, 2024. Hardwick emphasized that various factors contributed to this extraordinary statistic while acknowledging the combined effort necessary for such success.
He pointed out that nearly 80% of the sheriff’s office budget is allocated for salaries and benefits, highlighting the crucial support from city officials. This funding has allowed for more investment in technology and training within the department, which he believes plays a critical role in keeping the community safe.
“I am honestly giving back to the commissioners who approved the budget and allowed us to invest in technology and allow us to invest in our agency members and their equipment,” he added.
Hardwick also mentioned the importance of community engagement, emphasizing that residents play a vital role in safety. “It goes back to the community believing in us and not being afraid to call us when something suspicious happened,” he stated, stressing that residents reporting unusual activity helps law enforcement do their job effectively.
While celebrating this achievement, Hardwick did express a sense of caution. He noted the rise in domestic violence cases and protection order violations over the past year, implying that there’s more work ahead to ensure they maintain this level of safety. “We had a great year, and a lucky year,” he concluded.
