Caleb Williams’ Heroics Fall Short for Bears
At one point, Caleb Williams showcased his extraordinary talent on the field.
The young quarterback for the Bears pushed their NFC Divisional Round game against the Rams into overtime, making a stunning throw to even the score at 17-17. However, that wasn’t quite enough to lead Chicago to the NFC Championship Game.
On that Sunday at Soldier Field, Harrison Mavis nailed a 42-yard field goal, giving the Rams a 20-17 victory in overtime.
Earlier in the game, Williams had a moment that felt nearly miraculous as he connected on a Hail Mary pass to Cole Kmet with less than 30 seconds left, securing a touchdown in the left corner of the end zone. The pressure from the Rams defense forced Williams to retreat more than 30 yards, yet he somehow managed to get the ball airborne, electrically thrilling the crowd.
“It’s incredible to tie the game on fourth down,” remarked head coach Ben Johnson during the postgame press conference. “There are things you just can’t coach. He has that ability; he does so many impressive things.”
This exciting moment added to what has been a remarkable season for Bears fans under first-year coach Ben Johnson, who led the team to an unexpected series of victories resulting in an 11-6 record.
This marked the Bears’ first appearance in the NFC regional round since the 2010 playoffs and their division title after last season’s last-place finish.
“This year has been a blast,” Williams shared with reporters post-game. “It’s been one of the most enjoyable years of my football career. There have been ups, downs, and, well, everything in between. Just being in the locker room with this group has been fantastic. I feel proud of these players.”
Williams completed 23 passes, threw for 257 yards, and recorded two touchdowns, but he also struggled with three interceptions throughout the season.
The crucial interception came during overtime when the Bears were nearing a scoring opportunity at the Rams’ 48-yard line. Attempting a pass to DJ Moore, the two appeared misaligned, leading to safety Cam Curl intercepting the ball at the 22-yard line.
With the game decided, Mavis secured the Rams’ win with another 42-yard field goal, setting them up for a match against the Seahawks in Seattle, eyeing a Super Bowl berth.
