Buffalo Bill’s Major Coaching Reforms

Buffalo recently announced significant changes in its coaching staff, spotlighting promotions within the organization.

Just two days after the Bills faced a contentious 33-30 defeat against the Denver Broncos, the decision was made to part ways with coach Sean McDermott. In a twist, general manager Brandon Beane will now not only continue his role but also take on the title of president of football operations, tasked with finding a new head coach.

Owner Terry Pegula expressed this new direction on Monday, revealing Beane’s expanded responsibilities.

This past season, the Bills managed a record of 12-5 but stumbled in the divisional round, falling short of their Super Bowl aspirations despite consistent playoff success over recent years with quarterback Josh Allen at the helm.

Beane has performed well in assembling a capable offensive line and a solid running back corps, notably led by James Cook, who was the rushing champion during the regular season. However, there appears to be a glaring issue with playmakers on the team.

The draft didn’t quite pan out as hoped either; Beane selected Keon Coleman with the 33rd pick in the 2024 second round, yet his performance left much to be desired. This was particularly concerning given the loss of a key playmaker who was traded to the Chiefs, while Xavier Worthy was picked up by them at the 28th slot—originally held by the Bills.

This absence became painfully evident during a pivotal moment in the game when a controversial pass to Brandin Cooks was mishandled, leading to an interception by Jaquan McMillian. Cooks himself had been released by the Saints earlier in the season before joining Buffalo mid-year as their top receiver.

I mean, it’s tough to overlook the setbacks with receivers like Gabe Davis, who—after being released by the Jaguars—only played five games before injuring his ACL in the wild-card round. But, he did have a significant impact when he was on the field, so it’s a mixed bag, really.

In a previous statement, Beane emphasized the importance of “financial responsibility” to prevent a downturn similar to that of the Rams, who faced a disappointing 5-12 season. Ironically, Los Angeles seems to be on the rebound, having reshuffled its lineup and progressed to the NFC Championship Game.

Buffalo’s decisions come at a chaotic time for coaching changes in the league, with two prominent candidates already off the table: John Harbaugh heading to the Giants and Kevin Stefanski signing with the Falcons. It certainly raises questions about the direction they’re taking.
