Capitals’ Pride Night Sparks Mixed Reactions
Washington Capitals players from outside North America might not have the same familiarity with Pride Night as others do.
On Saturday night, the Capitals hosted an event celebrating alternative sexual lifestyles, dubbed “all caps, all love.” The evening included raising the rainbow and transgender flags and featuring a gay memorabilia auction.
When the NHL prohibited themed jerseys in 2023, many advocated for the use of rainbow stick tape—which some successfully managed to implement. As a result, a few Capitals players opted to display their pride during a game against the reigning Florida Panthers. However, when both teams hit the ice, it was apparent that only eight out of the twenty players in Capitals gear participated.
Notable players in attendance included John Carlson, Nick Dowd, Brandon Duhaime, Hendricks Lapierre, Connor McMichael, Dylan Strome, Logan Thompson, and Trevor van Riemsdyk. Interestingly, each of these players was from the U.S. or Canada, with no foreign-born Capitals players joining in.
Among those absent was team captain and NHL’s all-time scoring leader, Alexander Ovechkin.
Foreign players missing from the event included center Aliaksei Protas from Belarus, left winger Ivan Miroshnichenko from Russia, defenseman Martin Feherváry from Slovakia, and defenseman Rasmus Sandin from Sweden.
Despite the absence of their biggest star, the Capitals made efforts to show support for the LGBTQ+ community throughout the evening. In a team video, Strome, who resides in Canada, mentioned, “We proudly support the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate the importance of inclusion every day.”
Post-game, Dowd reflected on the night, stating, “It was amazing. We’ve been doing this every year, and I thought it was another opportunity for everyone to lean into it and cheer. I think the Caps did a great job celebrating.”
That night, they also performed with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. Unfortunately for the Capitals, their efforts weren’t enough on the scoreboard, as they lost to the Panthers 5-2.
The Seattle Kraken recently faced backlash for supporting transgender themes through a controversial logo designed by a tattoo artist. The artist noted that being around the LGBTQ+ community in Seattle has inspired their work, something that was not originally part of their experience.
