DHS criticizes Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Jacob Frey for 'safeguarding' undocumented immigrants

DHS Accuses Minnesota Leaders of Non-Cooperation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently took aim at Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, claiming they are not cooperating with law enforcement efforts.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated that federal agents have apprehended around 10,000 undocumented individuals in Minneapolis over recent months, asserting that Walz and Frey are prioritizing the protection of criminals instead of their citizens. Minneapolis operates as a sanctuary city, which, according to Noem, leads to local law enforcement disregarding federal immigration detainers.

“Because Tim Walz and Jacob Frey have chosen to protect criminals over their own citizens, we have arrested over 10,000 dangerous undocumented individuals who are victimizing Americans and endangering children,” Noem expressed on X.

The DHS urged state and city officials to start complying with federal detainment requests in relation to those arrested.

The situation in Minneapolis escalated recently, as protests erupted against federal law enforcement tactics. In early January, federal agents conducted an extensive investigation into a fraud case that resulted in multiple arrests, primarily involving individuals from the city’s significant Somali community.

Additionally, a controversial incident on January 7 led to federal agents shooting protester Renee Good, heightening calls for scrutiny over ICE actions. Federal authorities claim Good threatened agents by using his vehicle as a weapon and asserted self-defense.

Democratic officials have criticized the administration’s stance on immigration enforcement, describing the shooting as a “murder.” In a recent CBS interview, Frey challenged the portrayal of Minnesota’s immigration policies by the Trump administration, arguing it makes residents feel targeted rather than safeguarded.

“This is not about safety. It’s about fighting against the terrorizing of our community, especially against Latino or Somali individuals,” Frey stated. He added that the residents of Minneapolis are peacefully advocating for one another, emphasizing the importance of caring for all who live in the city.
