Comedian Dana Carvey Identifies as a ‘Bill Clinton Liberal’
In a recent interview, comedian Dana Carvey described his political stance as a “Bill Clinton liberal,” suggesting that in today’s environment, it feels almost like being labeled a “Nazi.” It’s quite a jump, right?
During an episode of Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, Carvey, alongside David Spade from “Fly on the Wall,” discussed the fluctuations in award nominations for comedy specials. Maher mentioned a decline, noting that they’d previously received nominations in a vast array of categories. But, then, “the awakening” began, and suddenly people seemed to categorize them as conservative, which he thought was absurd. He humorously referred to this as a “soft cancellation.”
With a bit of laughter, Carvey chimed in about his political identity, saying, “Well, I’m a Bill Clinton liberal— a ‘90s liberal who’s now deemed a Nazi.” Quite the irony, huh?
Spade added that this situation mirrors what’s often seen on the “far right,” making a quip about being labeled a white supremacist. They all seemed to find humor in it, which is interesting in today’s climate.
Maher reflected on his own nomination for a Golden Globe for his special “Is Anyone Else Seeing This?” noting it was the first acknowledgment he’d received in a long while. He asked himself if this signified a shift away from wokeness. “I think this is a little bit of an indication that we’re coming out of wokeness… I’m pleased they couldn’t ignore how good that special was,” Maher commented.
Though ultimately, Ricky Gervais took home the award for best stand-up comedy on television. Maher kept the conversation lively, mentioning that his material isn’t for those overly sensitive about social issues. “When you do something foolish, it’s funny,” he insisted, suggesting the left had made quite a few missteps in recent years. He continued to poke fun at it because, well, he’s a comedian and that’s where the laughs tend to be.
Carvey then shifted gears, doing a bit where he impersonated former President Barack Obama reciting nursery rhymes— a playful touch to the interview.
Wrapping up their banter, Carvey humorously noted, “That’s the double whammy of transgender jokes.” It seems he had the audience in mind, playfully engaging them with his observations.
Both Carvey and Spade, with their ties to “Saturday Night Live,” have been engaging audiences for years, continuing to navigate the comedic landscape with both insight and humor.
