Eric Holder Critiques Voter Suppression at MLK Day Breakfast

Former Attorney General Eric Holder recently spoke at the National Action Network’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Legislative Breakfast in Washington, D.C. He delivered a strong critique of what he sees as state-sponsored voter suppression, racial gerrymandering, and threats to democratic institutions.

Holder expressed concern over ongoing efforts to dismantle the Voting Rights Act, which he described as “the crown jewel of the civil rights movement” and a key part of Dr. King’s legacy. He indicated that what’s happening in the country is testing both our institutions and our ability to defend democratic ideals. “These actions require heightened stakes and equal clarity of purpose from all of us,” he added.

During his speech, he accused the Department of Justice of being “armed by the president and his minions to silence critics and intimidate voters.” Holder also took aim at federal immigration enforcement, stating, “We are observing Gestapo tactics by federal immigration enforcement not only in Minnesota but across the country.”

The federal government has confirmed the deportation of over 2,500 individuals described as criminal aliens in recent weeks, with an additional 1,360 detainees requesting transfers from local jails. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem referred to those arrested as “vicious murderers, rapists, pedophiles and extremely dangerous individuals.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Gov. Tim Walz expressed their opposition to these federal actions, prompting investigations into possible local interference with enforcement efforts.

Holder also mentioned the shooting death of Renee Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis, urging the audience to remember her name. A federal investigation is currently looking into whether Good’s partner was involved in the confrontation, as it’s alleged he used a car to strike an ICE officer, which led to the shooting. This incident has been classified as “domestic terrorism” by the Department of Homeland Security. Video footage reportedly captures Good’s partner urging, “Drive, baby, drive!” and expressing remorse afterward.

Holder’s remarks extended to the subject of redistricting, where he accused the administration of engaging in unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering to disenfranchise Black and brown voters while the president clings to power like “an anxious dictator.”

He sees the current political climate as a continuation of ongoing racial tensions, stating, “there is a concerted effort to re-racialize America” and that historical attempts at repression often feel overwhelming. He invoked figures like Jim Clark and Bull Connor to illustrate his points.

In closing, Holder urged Americans to take matters into their own hands rather than wait for external help, asserting, “There will be no miracle rescue. We are the cavalry.”

This speech followed Holder’s recent reelection and came amid criticism from former President Donald Trump, who has questioned Holder’s proposals for reforming the Supreme Court. Trump accused Holder of advocating for a radical expansion of the court that he claimed would “destroy our Constitution,” while also referencing Holder’s past actions at the Justice Department.
