Celebrating a Historic Win
After the title ceremony, which marked an incredible moment for Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman winner immediately looked for his family. It was a national championship victory that he wanted to share.
Wearing his championship hat, he found his wheelchair-bound mother, Elsa, and father, Fernando Sr. Photographers captured that touching moment. This was one the Mendoza family will hold dear, particularly because of the close relationship between mother and son—the quarterback has often referred to his mom as his “best friend.”
“This is a dream come true,” Elsa said, who battles multiple sclerosis (MS), speaking to reporters after the game. Fernando’s college journey had a Hollywood-like beginning, leading his team to a stunning 27-21 win over Miami, wrapping up an impressive 16-0 season, perhaps one of the best in college football history.
Throughout this remarkable season, Fernando has consistently acknowledged that he wouldn’t be where he is without the support of his mother. Notably, he called Elsa his “best friend” in a video shared on social media, highlighting their inspiring relationship, particularly in light of her struggles with MS.
MS affects the protective coverings of nerves, influencing mobility, according to medical sources. Fernando has been proactive, partnering with a local company to launch the “Mendoza Burrito,” with all profits directed to the National MS Society.
“Her happiness and determination inspire me every day,” Fernando shared. He emphasized that whenever he feels exhausted during workouts, he remembers his mother’s daily efforts and her positive attitude, which motivates him to push harder.
In his debut season at Indiana, Mendoza transformed the team from underdogs to champions, defeating powerhouse Ohio State in the championship and also taking down Alabama, Oregon, and Miami during playoffs. His stellar performance earned him the prestigious Heisman Trophy.
Before the ceremony, Elsa penned a heartfelt essay reflecting on their journey together. It was a tribute to her son for his unwavering support during tough times. She expressed gratitude for how he has always made her feel valued, never viewing her through the lens of her condition but rather as someone loved and respected.
“Even when conditions change, you’ve always made me feel like I’m part of you, just like we were teammates from day one,” she wrote.
When he received the Heisman, tears filled Fernando’s eyes as he honored his mother, who was emotional too. “Mom, this is my trophy, but it’s also yours,” he declared. He recognized her as his strongest supporter, crediting her sacrifices and love as foundational to his success.
During the game, coverage on ESPN showed Elsa and Fernando Sr. celebrating the highs and lows, especially as Indiana scored a significant fourth touchdown to establish a strong lead. As the defense sealed the victory with an interception, it allowed the Mendoza family one final moment to revel in a perfect season.
