Crockett Responds to Critics of Senate Campaign

In a recent interview, Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Texas, addressed her critics, including comedian Bowen Yang and podcaster Matt Rogers. These individuals had suggested that people shouldn’t invest in her Senate campaign and raised doubts about her chances of winning.

“You know, there are clips out there where Yang and Rogers question whether folks should support me,” Crockett explained. Jamie Harrison, a former chair of the Democratic National Committee, pointed out that recent comments have been making the rounds, and they’ve been discouraging donors from contributing to her campaign.

She mentioned hearing phrases like “She can’t win in Texas” from those with prominent platforms. Responding to this, Crockett said, “Yeah, people are afraid. And it’s not that I’m scared of losing; it’s more that they might fear my winning. That’s what it feels like to me. I guess I just expect certain things from the right side of the aisle, not from the left,” she added.

Earlier this month, Yang and Rogers criticized some political campaigns for being “too self-centered” and suggested that people shouldn’t donate to Crockett’s efforts. After facing criticism, they both eventually apologized for their remarks.

It’s worth noting that Texas has not elected a Democratic senator since 1988, when Lloyd Bentsen was re-elected. Crockett brushed off the skepticism surrounding her candidacy, hinting that some doubts might be financially motivated.

“The internet isn’t really reflective of reality. Ask yourself, is someone being paid to push these narratives? And if so, who is footing the bill?” she pondered.

Crockett emphasized her track record of winning elections, stating that she has always relied on support from small donors. She also shared her thoughts on potential backlash if she were to win, claiming, “If I do win, they’ll just say it was a fluke, that the stars aligned. It will never be credited to the hard work I put in, or how my team dedicated themselves to connecting with Texans.” She mentioned her exhaustion from the campaign trail, hinting that it wasn’t merely an easy victory.

Other Democrats have voiced concerns about whether Crockett can gain enough support to win statewide in Texas.

During discussions, one senior party member remarked, “Sure, she could win the primary. But the general? That’s a whole different ballgame.” Another Democrat expressed doubts, calling the decision to run in Texas a “bad move.”

Crockett’s primary challenge comes from fellow Democrat James Talarico, the state representative.
