U.S. Embassy in Guatemala Issues Travel Alert Amid Violence

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has released a warning advising American citizens to exercise “extra vigilance” while visiting the country.

In an alert published on Sunday, the embassy announced the lifting of its shelter-in-place order for staff. However, it emphasized that the situation remains tense, citing coordinated armed attacks on police in various parts of Guatemala City.

Travelers are encouraged to keep an eye on local news for updates, steer clear of large gatherings and protests, and maintain a discreet presence.

Security Concerns and Recent Violence

Following violent incidents where gangs targeted police after seizing control of three prisons during an organized riot, the embassy’s alert was issued. Reports indicate that at least 10 police officers lost their lives during these gang assaults.

The Guatemala Tourism Association noted that over 2.9 million international tourists visited the country from January to November 2025, showcasing Guatemala’s popularity as a travel destination.

President Bernardo Arevalo recently declared a state of emergency, prompted by the hostage situation involving 43 guards and police fatalities.

The declaration described “coordinated actions by self-styled maras and gangs against state security forces, including armed assaults on civilian authorities.” Violence is reportedly connected to major criminal groups like Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), both categorized as terrorist organizations by both Guatemala and the U.S.

In light of these events, the U.S. Embassy has condemned the attacks, stating that “These terrorists, and those aligned with them, have no rightful place in our hemisphere.”

As violence persists, the U.S. Department of State has categorized Guatemala with a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” advisory, emphasizing the need for travelers to assess safety risks beforehand.

The advisory system includes four levels: Level 1—Take normal precautions; Level 2—Be extra careful; Level 3—Reconsider travel; and Level 4—Travel prohibited.

The embassy concluded with a commitment to support Guatemalan security forces in their efforts to address violence, indicating the importance of ensuring the safety of both the Guatemalan people and regional stability.
