New York City retiree given prison time for acting in self-defense

Journalist Savana Hernandez highlights a troubling incident from New York City involving a man sentenced to four years in prison for defending himself.

“I just witnessed the sentencing of Charles Fehner, a 67-year-old retiree who received a four-year prison term after an encounter with a 15-time career criminal,” she shared.

“For those unfamiliar with Charles’ case, it goes back to 2023 when he was threatened and charged by a man who had a history of mental illness. Fearing for his safety, especially with rising crime rates, Charles pulled out a handgun he had and warned the man to stop,” she explained.

“The man didn’t listen and continued attacking Charles. In response, Charles fired, resulting in the man’s death,” she added.

The Queens prosecutor, Melinda Katz, acknowledged it was clearly self-defense and chose not to pursue murder or manslaughter charges. However, she charged him with criminal possession of a weapon instead.

During a police search of his home, they discovered what they termed an “unlicensed weapons cache.”

“Charles’ attorney mentioned that he has been around guns since childhood and has no criminal record. Yet, because he was in New York with an unlicensed weapon, the prosecutor’s office pressed charges,” Hernandez reported.

“It’s hard to believe this is happening in America. Charles lost his home due to legal fees, and while incarcerated, his Social Security benefits were cut off. You don’t receive that while in prison,” remarked Blaze TV host Sarah Gonzalez on “Sara Gonzalez Unfiltered.”

“The existence of unlicensed firearms laws seems unconstitutional to me; I should have the Second Amendment right to protect myself as I deem necessary,” she argued.

“If Charles hadn’t carried a weapon, he might not have survived that encounter. The fact that he’s now serving time for acting in self-defense is really shocking; authorities could raid your home and expect you to prove your right to own what you have,” she added.
