Duke University Sues Quarterback Darian Mensah Over Transfer Attempt
Duke University has initiated legal action against quarterback Darian Mensah in an effort to prevent him from transferring to another school for the upcoming football season.
The lawsuit was filed on Monday in Durham County Superior Court, just three days after Mensah decided to withdraw his earlier intention to return to the Blue Devils, a team he guided to an Atlantic Coast Conference title.
The university claims that Mensah’s contract, which he signed in July 2025 and extends through 2026, grants them exclusive rights to promote his name, image, and likeness (NIL) in relation to his college football activities.
In the complaint, Duke’s administration sought a temporary restraining order to stop Mensah from entering the transfer portal and making any agreements with a new school. They argue that all parties involved are contractually obligated to engage in arbitration to resolve any conflicts.
“This lawsuit stems from the choices made by star quarterbacks within the increasingly complicated realm of college athletics,” the suit reads. “At its core, it’s fundamentally about maintaining contractual integrity.”
In a previous move, Mensah transferred from Tulane and notably faced his former team. He ended the season ranking second in the Bowl Subdivision with an impressive 3,973 passing yards and sharing second place with 34 touchdown passes.
Mensah’s situation highlights a growing trend in college sports, where legal disputes over player contracts and transfers are becoming increasingly common, especially amid the evolving revenue-sharing structures.
Earlier this month, Washington State quarterback Damond Williams Jr. also announced his plans to transfer, but he quickly reversed that decision as reports surfaced about the school considering legal action regarding his NIL contract.
Additionally, in December, Missouri pass rusher Damon Wilson II filed a lawsuit against the University of Georgia, alleging that the athletic department attempted to improperly penalize him for entering the transfer portal.
