Mike McDaniel Navigates Coaching Interviews After Dolphins Exit

Following his firing as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Mike McDaniel has been making the rounds with interviews. His reputation as an offensive strategist quickly made him a candidate for numerous offensive coordinator positions. Yet, with several head coaching opportunities available, McDaniel has also been in talks for those roles.

He has previously met with teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens for their open head coaching spots. Additionally, he interviewed for offensive coordinator positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Detroit Lions.

However, just ahead of a planned second interview with the Browns, McDaniel chose to withdraw his name from consideration.

As reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, he informed the Browns on Tuesday that he was “withdrawing” from their head coaching search before a second, in-person meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

Pelissero also mentioned that McDaniel likely has several offers for offensive coordinator roles. While he’s pondering those opportunities, he might be looking favorably at the head coaching situations in Las Vegas and Baltimore. Coaching Lamar Jackson, a two-time MVP, could be appealing, especially given Baltimore’s successful playoff history.

On the other hand, the Raiders still have a long way to go before they can reclaim relevancy. However, with the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft, they might be in a position to find their future franchise quarterback.

That prospect likely points to Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, who recently celebrated a national championship win against Miami.

As for the Browns, they’re set to pick at No. 6 but face a complicated quarterback situation with Deshaun Watson, Shedule Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel. They also have significant work ahead to ensure compliance with the cap for the 2026 NFL season.

Even if McDaniel doesn’t land a head coaching position, the opportunity to coordinate plays for stars like Justin Herbert in Los Angeles or Jared Goff in Detroit for a year or two could keep him in the game, ultimately setting him up for future head coaching opportunities.

Given all these options, McDaniel’s choices might seem quite strategic.
