Tragic Deaths of Two Ohio College Students

On Monday, two college students from Ohio, including a men’s lacrosse player, were found dead in a vehicle on campus, just months after celebrating their first anniversary together.

Luke Reimer, 20, and Mary Mitch, also 20, who were both juniors at Franciscan University of Steubenville, died from carbon monoxide poisoning, as confirmed by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The news came shortly after noon on that day.

“This news brings deep sadness to the entire Franciscan University community,” the university president expressed. He emphasized the collective grief for the loss of these young lives and the impact on their families, friends, classmates, and professors. “We hold Luke and Mary and all those who mourn them in our prayers,” he added.

Reimer, originally from Indian Shores, Florida, was found near St. Agnes Residence Hall, located 32 miles west of Pennsylvania along the Ohio River at the West Virginia border.

Preliminary reports from the Steubenville Police Department suggest that the tragic incident may have resulted from the vehicle’s exhaust or potential engine failure. Fortunately, officials have ruled out foul play.

“At times like this, it is especially important to take care of each other,” the president emphasized. He encouraged anyone feeling distressed to seek help from friends, faculty, and available resources.

The couple had been together for over a year and celebrated their first anniversary on November 1, as noted in Reimer’s Instagram. He shared cheerful photos of them on campus with a heartfelt message: “A year spent with the most beautiful woman! I love you.”

Reimer was part of the Franciscan University men’s lacrosse team, where he played as a defenseman, participating in 31 games over his two years. He had chosen this university to build faith, life, and lasting friendships.

The university canceled Monday night’s events and organized a prayer service for the two students. Counselors were made available to support students and staff in the aftermath.

“Let us unite in faith, hope, and charity during this sorrowful time,” the president concluded. “May Christ provide us with strength and peace.”
