Swastika discovered etched into train station window in Jewish neighborhood

A swastika was discovered carved into a glass window at a Long Island Rail Road station in a predominantly Jewish area of Nassau County, according to local officials.

This hateful mark was found at Inwood Station in Lawrence on Wednesday. This incident follows reports about a rise in anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial on the island, shared just weeks prior.

“Hate, anti-Semitism, or any form of intolerance has no place in our community. The Village of Lawrence stands united against acts that aim to divide and intimidate,” stated Mayor Samuel Nahmias after the discovery became known.

“This is an insult not only to residents but also to the values of respect and coexistence that characterize our village,” added the mayor, who is part of the largely Jewish community.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into this hate crime is being conducted by both MTA and Nassau County police to identify those responsible.

“Let me be equally clear: this case will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the mayor emphasized.

A recent survey involving nearly 400 Long Island residents revealed that around 15 percent thought Holocaust deaths were exaggerated, and double that number opposed including these historical horrors in school curriculums.

Nahmias remarked that this event, along with a noticeable uptick in offensive acts, which may include rising anti-Semitism, supports the village’s decision to create a $250,000 security system comprising 160 cameras within its borders.

Community leaders believe that this investment, funded through a larger $1.2 million grant, will be highly beneficial, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority.

“Every time a resident is the victim of a crime, the first question they ask is, ‘Where are the cameras?’ With this investment, we can finally provide that answer,” Board Member Shlomo Gottesman noted.

Nahmias further added that the incorporation of cameras alongside law enforcement efforts will facilitate quicker responses, deter criminal activity, and assist in identifying and catching suspects.

“We take safety and security here very seriously,” the mayor said.

“We come together as a community and continue to stand strong against hate and reaffirm the values of respect, unity, and dignity that define the Village of Lawrence,” he concluded.
