Mexico Extradites 37 Cartel Members to the U.S.

On Tuesday, Mexico extradited 37 members of drug cartels to the United States, responding to increasing pressure from the Trump administration to dismantle drug trafficking operations.

According to Mexico’s Security Minister, Omar García Harfuch, these individuals are “serious criminals” who represent a “real threat to the country’s security.” With this latest batch, Mexico has now sent a total of 92 cartel figures to the U.S., he noted.

Footage shared by Mexican authorities depicted handcuffed prisoners being escorted by heavily armed police, as they boarded a military aircraft near Mexico City.

The group included members from prominent criminal organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Beltrán Leyva Cartel, Northeast Cartel, and remnants of the Zetas, who operate near the Texas border. Officials mentioned that all those extradited have outstanding cases in U.S. courts.

One notable deportee is María del Rosario Navarro Sánchez, the first Mexican national charged in the U.S. for providing material support to a terrorist organization due to her alleged collaboration with these cartels.

David Mora, an analyst at the International Crisis Group, remarked that Mexico’s actions reflect “extraordinary measures” taken under mounting pressure from Washington.

This extradition marks the third such event in under a year, stemming from the escalating threats posed by President Trump’s administration. Trump has ramped up discourse against drug cartels and hinted at potential military action following recent operations in Venezuela that resulted in the ousting of former President Nicolás Maduro.

During a conversation earlier this month with Sean Hannity from Fox News, Trump claimed, “We’ve taken out 97% of the drugs that come in through our waterways. Now we’re going to start landing on land in terms of cartels.” He expressed concern over the state of Mexico, stating that “cartels are running Mexico” and described the situation as very unfortunate.

In a recent meeting, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum conveyed to Trump that there was “no need” for any U.S. intervention in Mexico while reaffirming the importance of ongoing collaboration between the two nations.

In February, Mexico had initially sent 29 cartel members to the U.S., featuring well-known drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who is wanted for his involvement in the murder of a U.S. drug agent back in 1985. Following that, an additional 26 members were extradited in August from various organizations.

García-Harfuch stated that these transfers were a measure intended to enhance public safety, emphasizing that cartel leaders frequently continue their illicit activities even while incarcerated in Mexican prisons.
