Trump Indicates He Won't Use Military Force to Obtain Greenland

Trump’s Position on Greenland Acquisition

During a speech at the World Economic Forum, President Donald Trump stated he would not resort to military force to claim Greenland from Denmark.

Trump has indicated a desire for Greenland to be transferred to the U.S., citing national security. He plans to implement tariffs on European nations that don’t support this claim, but emphasized he does not wish to “use force” in this matter.

He remarked, “We asked for nothing and got nothing. Although you may not get anything unless you use excessive force and power, frankly, we will be unstoppable. But I won’t do that. Well, now everyone’s like, ‘Oh, good.’ That’s probably the biggest statement I’ve made. Because people thought I was going to use force. There’s no need to use force. I don’t want to use force. We will not use force,” he asserted.

Additionally, Trump mentioned the U.S. wants to establish the Golden Dome missile defense system in Greenland. This system aims to utilize advanced technology to target various missile threats against the mainland, a decision he believes is crucial to counteract potential Russian or Chinese influence in the area. Trump pointed out that Denmark is unable to secure Greenland from these adversaries.

Strategically positioned between the U.S. and Russia, Greenland is rich in valuable minerals, which has raised alarms about foreign powers’ intentions.

The U.S. intends to levy a 10% tariff on Denmark and several other European nations that oppose the Greenland acquisition, effective February 1. The tariff will increase to 25% by June 1 and will remain until the U.S. secures what Trump describes as a “full and comprehensive purchase of Greenland.”

A leader from Europe has publicly stated he would not be “intimidated” by Trump’s tariff announcements, rejecting the suggestions of coercive tactics.
