LeBron James and Nike Receive Criticism for Shoes Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s Assassination Location

Nike’s Latest Shoe Release Sparks Controversy

Nike is making waves with its new shoe, linking NBA superstar LeBron James to the legendary civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in a rather unusual way, especially by emphasizing the location of King’s assassination.

The “Honor The King” sneakers are designed in a pastel teal blue and feature “Lot_066.LBJ23” on the tongue and “EQUALITY” on the heel, drawing inspiration from the historic Lorraine Motel where Dr. King lost his life.

Nike claims the shoe aims to “commemorate” James’ career, referencing the night he scored 51 points against the Memphis Grizzlies. The company added that both LeBron and Martin Luther King Jr. are honored through the design, which is linked to an important moment in civil rights history.

Critics find it odd that Nike chose the teal color that echoes the motel associated with such a tragic event. Highlighting King’s assassination rather than his monumental achievements feels misplaced. It’s akin to celebrating Abraham Lincoln with Confederate colors simply because he was assassinated by a supporter of that cause—doesn’t seem right, does it?

Moreover, the juxtaposition of a basketball player with a civil rights icon raises eyebrows. It’s difficult not to wonder how one could equate James to King, who dedicated his life to fighting for equality. It’s perhaps a stretch, isn’t it?

Reactions to the shoe design have been mixed. One critic stated, “You lost me at the Lorraine Motel,” suggesting that while Nike has previously pushed for equality, this particular effort misses the mark. Others echoed similar sentiments, branding it as a huge misstep in how we remember Dr. King; some things, they argue, should be honored rather than commercialized.

Interestingly, the Lorraine Motel—which is now a civil rights museum—was reportedly caught off guard by the shoe announcement, having not been informed beforehand. Many feel there were much more fitting ways to honor the legacy of the Kings. For instance, a design inspired by Morehouse College, where Martin Luther King Jr. studied, would have been a more appropriate tribute, especially given Nike’s existing relationship with the school.

In reflecting on Dr. King, it’s essential to focus on his life and contributions, not just the moment of his death. Not everything should be exploited commercially, right? Many fans seem to agree with this perspective.
