Timothy Busfield Granted Release Pending Trial in Child Abuse Case
Actor Timothy Busfield, known for his role in “The West Wing,” has recently achieved a notable victory in his child sexual abuse case, resulting in his release from prison while awaiting trial.
On January 20th, during a court hearing, he was released without bail. Busfield had previously turned himself in to authorities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, shortly after an arrest warrant was issued. He was taken into custody on January 13 and was held until the first hearing.
A judge commented, “I don’t think there was a sufficient indication that this defendant was likely to commit new crimes if released pending trial.” The judge also stated that there was no evidence of a criminal history involving children.
In footage shared by TMZ, the judge highlighted that Busfield had complied with court orders by surrendering voluntarily, rejecting the prosecution’s motions.
As part of the conditions for his release, the judge ordered Busfield to attend all future court sessions, noting he wouldn’t restrict his travel, though he had to report to pretrial services in the state. He also emphasized that Busfield must not possess firearms or contact the alleged victims or their families.
Interestingly, Busfield’s attorney, Amber Feyerberg, pointed to police recordings showing the alleged victims affirming that Busfield had not inappropriately touched them. In court, a cinematographer testified that numerous crew members were present during the time of the alleged incidents, suggesting that the behavior in question could not have gone unnoticed.
Feyerberg also brought to light claims that the mother of the alleged victims had expressed intentions of retaliation against Busfield if her children faced job loss. Additionally, it was noted that the children’s father has a troubled legal history, having faced serious charges in the past.
During the hearing, Busfield’s wife, Melissa Gilbert, was present in the courtroom and was visibly emotional as the proceedings unfolded.
