College Football Player Signs 'Jesus Loves You' after Touchdown, Causing Increase in Google Searches

This week, a notable celebration by college football player Mark Fletcher Jr. garnered attention when he signed “Jesus loves you” in American Sign Language. The gesture captured the interest of many fans, highlighting how athletes can shape cultural moments.

Dressed in Miami Hurricanes gear, Fletcher signaled to ESPN’s cameras right after he scored a touchdown, narrowing Indiana University’s lead to 17-7 during the College Football National Championship Game. Although Miami ultimately lost, the impact of his actions resonated with numerous viewers.

In fact, Fletcher performed the sign after scoring not just once, but twice.

Data from Google Trends showed a noticeable increase in searches for “Jesus Loves You Sign Language” just hours after Fletcher’s gesture, and this interest seemed to rise further with social media shares in the following days.

Fletcher’s faith took on deeper significance following the unexpected passing of his father, Mark Fletcher Sr., in October 2024. This loss was particularly hard for him, as he had viewed his father as a best friend, role model, and unwavering supporter. They exchanged texts every morning, a routine interrupted by that tragic day.

Upon receiving the news of his father’s death at the team facility, he rushed outside, overwhelmed by grief. Head coach Mario Cristobal and other staff followed to support him, ensuring he knew he wasn’t alone in his suffering.

“If they hadn’t come after me, I honestly don’t know what would have happened to me at that moment,” Fletcher reflected. “Thank God for them. I was lost, and their support meant everything.”

In the 2025 season, Fletcher led Miami with 1,192 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. When asked about what faith meant to him over the past two years, he responded, “God will never leave you.”

He elaborated, “Life has its storms and adversity, but faith is constant. You should be grateful for both the good times and the bad, since the tough moments help you cherish the good ones when they return. Just hold onto that faith.” Fletcher is set to return for his senior season in 2026 and is part of a growing number of athletes using their platforms to convey messages of faith, similar to his fellow player Treveillon Henderson, who signed “Jesus Loves You” after a touchdown at Ohio State.
