Jordan Clarkson's minutes decreasing in Knicks' strengthened lineup

Jordan Clarkson’s minutes took a hit as the Knicks stepped up their game.

He only played during garbage time in the Knicks’ significant 120-66 defeat against the Nets at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, making an appearance at the start of the fourth when they were already ahead by 32 points.

This came after he clocked in just two minutes during Monday’s lopsided loss to the Mavericks.

“Yeah, it might be tough to get him in the rotation,” coach Mike Brown remarked. He mentioned players like Deuce McBride, who performed well, and Mitch Robinson as challenging competition for minutes. Brown noted, “These guys are playing at high levels, and it’s tough to meet the standards I have for them.”

Clarkson joined the team in the offseason as a key addition to the revamped bench unit. Initially, he started strong but has struggled of late.

For the first 42 games, Clarkson averaged about 20.2 minutes a game, but he’s now effectively been sidelined in the last two matches.

“I read the room and knew what it was,” Clarkson reflected. “I’m a veteran, so I approach this professionally. It’s crucial to encourage the young players without undermining them.”

He added, “I’m still going to play, but it’s clear I won’t be finishing games.”

“I’ll keep doing things the right way, trying to help them grow and improve. That’s my role now.”

Although Clarkson didn’t have an explicit discussion with Brown about his reduced role, he admitted it wasn’t entirely unexpected.

He remains confident about reclaiming a significant position in the lineup.

“I can help any team in the league,” Clarkson asserted. “I contribute to wins. I know there’s still a lot left in my tank. I can make a difference wherever I play. I believe in my ability to contribute here too. You just have to stay ready and focus on what you can control.”
