Turning Point USA’s Erica Kirk Draws Parallels Between Protests and Recovery from Tragedy
During the launch of the inaugural Make Heaven Crowded Tour in Los Angeles, Erica Kirk, CEO of Turning Point USA, compared current protests against ICE to the recovery journey following her husband’s assassination. She seemed to find unexpected inspiration from an exchange involving Rachel Maddow and Jimmy Kimmel.
Kirk referenced this exchange, which she said had circulated among the staff of “The Charlie Kirk Show,” where Kimmel asked Maddow if she believed the protests against the Trump administration would result in anything beneficial. Maddow responded affirmatively, discussing the “3.5% rule” commonly referenced in political science. This principle suggests that when 3.5% of a population engages in nonviolent protest, they can dismantle authoritarian power.
“It’s interesting to think about,” Kirk reflected. “When 3.5% of people protest peacefully, it’s hard for that to be ignored. It can trigger change.” She shared her husband’s strong belief in the power of a committed minority standing up against wrongdoings, suggesting that it only takes a small group—much like the 3.5%—to make a significant impact.
Kirk noted the sense of unity at her husband’s memorial service, where Christians from various denominations came together in solidarity. This was, she argued, a manifestation of what the 3.5% could achieve.
“It didn’t matter what your background was—Baptist, Pentecostal, Catholic—we all gathered under Christ,” she said. “That unity is crucial. It’s what this tour represents.” She believes it’s about mobilizing those who stand for change, contrasting their mission with perspectives she sees as destructive.
Finally, she emphasized that the mission is simple: spreading the message of Jesus and uniting under the banner of faith. “The fire of the Holy Spirit shouldn’t be confined to church walls. If we want revival, our job is to bring people to Jesus and fill heaven,” she concluded.
