Trump Unveils Peace Commission in Davos
At a ceremony in Davos, Switzerland, President Trump announced a new charter for a peace commission aimed at establishing “peace in the Middle East.” He pledged to put an end to ongoing wars.
Trump described the occasion as a “very exciting day.” He stated that while there is peace in the region, many doubted its feasibility. “We’ve resolved eight wars, and we’re going to start another one, and you’ll see what it is,” he joked, referencing a ceasefire in the Israeli-Hamas conflict.
He went on to claim, “The world is a safer, richer, and much more peaceful place today than it was a year ago.”
In attendance were leaders from 19 other nations, including Argentina, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. Trump, who will lead the commission, noted, “Right now we are holding one of the most important conferences known as the Peace Commission.”
The commission is set to collaborate with the United Nations. Trump acknowledged the UN’s potential, suggesting that the cooperation between the commission and the UN could produce something truly transformative.
This commission, created as part of Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan introduced in September by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, aims to bring an end to the prolonged Israeli-Hamas conflict.
“If Hamas doesn’t do what they say, they were born with rifles in their hands, but they have to give up their weapons. If they don’t, it’s over for good,” Trump remarked.
A resolution recognizing the commission’s role in overseeing the Palestinian Transitional Government and international peacekeeping was ratified by the UN last November.
In recent communications, Trump hinted that the commission might expand its scope and even take over the UN’s role in mediating global disputes.
Despite some controversies, including the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin—whom Trump described as an asset rather than a liability—Britain has decided not to join the council at this time. Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper expressed concerns regarding Putin’s involvement, stating, “We are also concerned that President Putin is participating in activities that speak about peace, even though we have yet to see any sign of a commitment from him to peace in Ukraine.”
