Clintons Held in Contempt of Congress
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has decided to hold former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for not complying with a subpoena.
On Wednesday, the committee advanced resolutions with a vote of 34-8 to hold Bill in contempt, and 28-15 for Hillary.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer expressed satisfaction with the bipartisan vote, stating, “I am very pleased that there was a bipartisan vote today to call the Clintons in contempt of Congress. This shows that no one is above the law.”
When asked about the surprising number of Democrats who sided with Republicans on this issue, Comer reflected, “In my heart of hearts, I knew there would be some Democrats who would agree with that. I’m very, very proud of them.”
Nine Democrats supported the resolution for Bill Clinton, including Representatives Maxwell Frost, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Summer Lee, Stephen Lynch, Ayanna Pressley, Emily Randall, Latefa Simon, Melanie Stansbury, and Rashida Tlaib.
Stansbury noted her disappointment that the Clintons did not attend their scheduled appearance. “I’m very troubled that they didn’t show up,” she said.
Frost articulated a sentiment that resonated with many, stating, “I don’t care if you’re a Democrat. I don’t care if you’re a Republican. I’m tired of rich people trying to evade justice and responsibility.” He emphasized that accountability shouldn’t be influenced by political alignment.
Comer is optimistic that both resolutions will pass in the House, adding that he believes the vote will garner support from some Democrats despite pressure to oppose it from party leadership. “Make no mistake about me, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton and their lawyers,” he remarked. “They’ve had five months to comply, and I think it’s a step too far to try to defend the indefensible and act like Bill Clinton is the victim here.”
As developments unfold, the resolutions now move to the House for a vote, which could initiate a criminal inquiry into the Clintons.
