Christian McCaffrey’s Impressive Comeback Season
Christian McCaffrey has made a strong return this season after facing a frustrating stretch last year due to injuries.
In August 2024, he injured his calf, which was initially expected to sideline him for just a few weeks. However, that injury caused him to miss the first eight games of the season. Just as he started to find his rhythm, a knee injury cut his season short after just four games.
Fast forward to this season, and McCaffrey seems to be back to his prime form. His strong performance has garnered a lot of attention and praise across the media.
After a rough past year, he’s emerged as a frontrunner for the league’s Player of the Year honor. What’s more, he’s the only non-quarterback in the running for the MVP award. Apart from that, he’s also competing for the Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in three years, having amassed 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 total touchdowns.
In the history of the league, only two players—Adrian Peterson in 2012 and Joe Burrow last year—have been finalists for all three major awards in a single season. Peterson took home the MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards, while Burrow humorously noted that being a repeat Comeback Player of the Year wasn’t quite what he had aimed for.
This year, McCaffrey fell just 76 yards short of reaching the 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards milestone for the second time. He became a member of that exclusive club in 2019, joining legends like Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk. Notably, he led all running backs with 102 receptions, while Bijan Robinson was the next closest with 79.
Earlier this season, McCaffrey was selected as a first-team All-Pro for the third time in his career. He’s also one of only eight players in history to achieve three or more 2,000-yard scrimmage seasons, still trailing Faulk, Eric Dickerson, and Walter Payton who each had four.
Additionally, McCaffrey is a finalist for the NFL’s Salute to Service Award, which recognizes the impact of professional sports in connecting with and uplifting service members, veterans, and their families.
As for what’s next, McCaffrey will find out the results of all four awards during the NFL Honors event on February 5th, right before the Super Bowl in the Bay Area.
