Isner and Sandgren Criticize Reporter’s Questioning at Australian Open
Former American tennis players John Isner and Tennis Sandgren expressed their disapproval on Thursday regarding a reporter’s questions directed at Amanda Anisimova during the Australian Open.
Anisimova was asked to reflect on her feelings about representing America and playing under the national flag. She chose not to engage with the question initially. The reporter then attempted to clarify his intent with further inquiries.
“Does everything that’s been happening in the United States complicate that for you?” the reporter pressed.
“I don’t think that matters,” Anisimova responded succinctly.
Isner took to social media to voice his thoughts on the matter, suggesting that tennis players should be asked questions related to their sport. “Popular opinion: Ask players tennis questions at tennis tournaments. This is really lame,” he tweeted.
Sandgren echoed similar sentiments, stating, “A bug reporter,” and went on to suggest that if someone is genuinely talented, they should focus on writing for reputable publications instead of asking athletes personal questions about their views.
This moment contrasted sharply with another recent incident featuring Coco Gauff. When asked about her opinions on the current state of the United States a year after President Donald Trump began his second term, she made a hopeful statement about a more peaceful future, acknowledging her challenges as a Black woman facing various experiences. Gauff mentioned how she tries to contribute positively by speaking out and donating to causes she supports.
She added, “As time goes on, I hope that we get to a point where we’re not where we are right now and keep moving forward.” Gauff referenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., emphasizing the importance of progress even amid current challenges.
The contrasting responses from Gauff and Anisimova highlight the complexities athletes face when navigating public discourse amidst their competitive careers.
