Reflections on Trump’s Influence in the GOP

It’s intriguing to consider how the Republican Party might have evolved had President Trump decided to champion conservative reformers instead of endorsing establishment figures beholden to special interests. Back in 2016, he disrupted the typical country club Republican dynamic. Yet, over the next five election cycles, he seemed to, I guess, pull up the rope ladder behind him, preventing reinforcements from joining the fight. This shift diminished his ability to deliver on the promises made during his initial term and allowed many within the party to distance themselves from his “America First” mantra while still riding on his coattails.

Many conservatives recognize that competitiveness fosters improvement. By safeguarding incumbents from significant challenges, Trump ironically keeps the party stagnant, and he’s repeating that error in his second term, backing the traditional, corporatist elements of the GOP in crucial races.

The Stakes for 2026

The early months of 2026 could set off a primary showdown of epic proportions for the right. There are plenty of weak establishment Republicans and several open seats in the largely red state Senate and gubernatorial races. If Trump backed grassroots conservatives in these critical roles, he could potentially shape red-state dominance for years to come, even amid struggles in tougher battleground areas. Instead, though, he seems to be undermining his own base.

Endorsement Decisions in Louisiana

This past weekend, Trump endorsed Louisiana Sen. Julia Letlow. Until now, he had largely refrained from supporting conservatives challenging incumbents—except for a notable endorsement for Rep. Bob Good in Virginia. It’s worth noting that he chose to endorse Letlow only after more conservative candidates, like John Fleming and Blake Miguez, made Sen. Bill Cassidy reconsider his positions. But Letlow has aligned herself with Cassidy on several contentious issues, including health care policies and COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Given Louisiana’s strong Trump support, it feels like a missed opportunity to elevate a more conservative representative.

The Significance of Governorships

As the political landscape evolves, the role of governors will become increasingly critical, particularly if Democrats regain significant power in Washington. Red-state governors could become the last line of defense against federal overreach, especially considering the possibility of national policies that mirror Gavin Newsom’s administration in California. With Ron DeSantis transforming Florida into a leading red model, Republicans should aim for an ambitious gubernatorial team. Yet, Trump’s endorsements have leaned towards familiar faces, rather than tackling the mediocrity head-on. For instance, in Florida, he backs Byron Donald, who has close ties with Congressional RINOs, rather than exploring newer, bolder options.

Consequences of Trump’s Actions in Texas

It’s also concerning how Trump has begun to meddle in state politics. In Texas, the GOP distanced itself from Democrats but then appointed Dustin Burroughs as speaker, much to the chagrin of the party. Burroughs proceeded to compromise by giving committees to Democrats, undermining conservative objectives. Meanwhile, Trump countered conservative backlash by endorsing Burroughs and his team for re-election, which only complicates matters further.

Ultimately, conservatives believe that, to enhance party dynamics, they need to welcome competition. Trump’s current support for incumbents seems to negate that idea, perpetuating a cycle of stagnation rather than progress.
