Charlie McAvoy from the Bruins shares his thoughts on the intense rivalry in the NHL

Boston Bruins Defenseman Reflects on Hockey’s Growth

Since its streaming release in November, “Heated Rivalry” has been generating buzz. After the Boston Bruins triumphed 4-3 against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, defenseman Charlie McAvoy addressed how the series influences hockey and promotes inclusivity.

“I think it’s growing, and the league has made great strides,” McAvoy mentioned, acknowledging the NHL’s efforts toward inclusion. He emphasized the Bruins’ commitment to fostering a welcoming atmosphere: “In our locker room, we’ve really tried hard to send that message—ensuring that everyone feels safe and comfortable in the game is crucial.”

“I haven’t seen it yet,” McAvoy continued, “but from what I’ve heard, the show is really working to boost the game and support its community. That’s fantastic. It’s good for hockey and everyone involved. I’m really glad we won tonight, and I hope many fans feel our support.”

He also pointed out the encouragement they’ve received from the community, which he finds meaningful: “It means a lot to them, so it’s the least we can do to show we’re all on the same team.”

“Heated Rivalry” is based on Rachel Reid’s novel series, “Game Changers,” showcasing a romantic storyline between two fictional hockey players: Shane Hollander from Canada and Ilya Rozanov from Russia.

The series impressed NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who shared that he binge-watched it in one night. He noted, “I thought the storyline was compelling and enjoyable, particularly how it drew from real events, like the Olympics or the All-Star Game. Very well executed.”

Actors Connor Story and Hudson Williams, who play rivals in the series, have been named torchbearers for the upcoming Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. After portraying Olympic-level competition on screen, they will have the chance to take part in the real-life event.

While neither will compete in actual games, their roles in the Olympic Torch Relay will ensure they remain in the spotlight. Details regarding their participation are still unclear.

Currently, the torch is in Trieste, Italy, with 13 more stops before it reaches Milan. The Winter Games are set for February 6-22, 2026.

In other news, “Heated Rivalry” has been confirmed for a second season. On Saturday, the Bruins will face off against the Montreal Canadiens.
