JD Vance Declares Significant Growth of Mexico City Policy

Vice President Vance Announces Expansion of Mexico City Policy

On Friday, Vice President J.D. Vance revealed a significant expansion of the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits foreign aid for the promotion of abortion. He shared this news at the 53rd March for Life in Washington, D.C., marking his second appearance at this major human rights event.

Vance explained that the updated policy will ensure that any international non-governmental organization involved in abortion activities abroad will not receive any U.S. funding. He emphasized that the goal is to “protect lives” and fight against what he termed “radical gender ideology” that impacts children.

Interestingly, Vance, who recently announced that he and his wife, Usha, are expecting their fourth child, mentioned that this expansion would apply to all non-military foreign aid from the United States. He stated, “Overall, we have expanded the Mexico City policy by about three times what it was before. And we’re proud of that because we believe in fighting for life.”

The Mexico City Policy originated during the Reagan administration to stop U.S. taxpayer money from supporting foreign entities that conduct or promote abortion. Each Democratic president has revoked this policy, while Republican leaders have consistently reinstated it.

Former President Donald Trump followed suit, reinstating the policy during both of his terms after the Biden administration, known for its support of abortion rights, rolled back the guideline. Notably, Trump signed an executive order to restore the policy on the same day as the 52nd March for Our Lives.

This year’s March for Life Rally is themed “life is a gift.” The first March for Life took place in 1974, shortly after the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision in 1973 established a constitutional right to abortion. In June 2022, the Court overturned that decision in the Dobbs case, returning the authority over abortion to individual states and their representatives.
