Jeremy Piven Reflects on His Iconic Cameo in Rush Hour 2
Fans of the Rush Hour films often recall Jeremy Piven’s memorable cameo in Rush Hour 2, where he played a clerk at a glamorous Versace store in Las Vegas. In this scene, he assists Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan’s characters as they shop for suits, delivering comedic lines that have left a lasting impression.
Piven mentioned, “When we shot that scene, it was just before we started on Entourage. I was kind of in that phase of being a journeyman actor. You know, having made around 40 movies by that point, and honestly, I think I still feel like I’m navigating that space. I had just one line: ‘Can I help you?’ So, I decided to improvise a little and had a blast with it. I’d love to revisit that character.”
It’s been nearly two decades since the last film, and while there’s excitement around a possible Rush Hour 4, some fans are concerned about whether the franchise can hold its ground in today’s more sensitive culture. The original movies were known for their action-packed sequences and politically incorrect humor.
“I just hope that whatever sequel comes out, it really captures the essence of what made Rush Hour special,” Piven shared. “It’d be interesting to see where my character stands now.” He added that he appreciated how viewers perceived his portrayal on New Yorkers Live, hoping it wasn’t seen as degrading toward the gay community. He believes that if people weren’t so easily triggered by comedy, they’d probably have better lives.
Piven emphasized the importance of staying true to the series’ original charm. Rush Hour’s humor largely stemmed from the cultural contrasts between Carter and Lee. He recalled a particularly funny scene from the first movie where Chan’s character inadvertently used a racial slur, and another scene in the second installment where Carter’s chatter almost gets him killed by a gangster.
“When they second-guess the humor or try to play it safe, I don’t think it leads to anything creative. Whether they maintain the spirit of the past movies… Chris and Jackie have changed as individuals and performers since then. Jackie is a legend, and I’m excited to see where they are now—and to potentially join them again.”
Fox News Digital has reached out to Paramount for further comments.
Piven, who gained fame for his role as Ari Gold in HBO’s Entourage, is currently on a comedy tour across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. He notes that stand-up comedy presents its own challenges: “No matter how the room feels, it’s our job to adapt and be the best versions of ourselves in that moment,” he explained.
