NBA trade deadline: The impact of Giannis' injury on the Bucks, Knicks, Warriors, Heat, and others

Giannis Antetokounmpo has sustained another injury just as the NBA trade deadline approaches on February 5. He mentioned that he suspects something has occurred with his calf. Following the Bucks’ recent defeat to the Denver Nuggets, he’s expected to miss four to six weeks for treatment, meaning he won’t be available before the trade deadline.

Currently, the Bucks have a record of 18-26, which would render them ineligible for the East play-in tournament if the season ended today. There are a couple of factors placing Milwaukee in the spotlight during trade discussions.

  1. Rumors about Giannis being traded are becoming difficult to ignore. An ESPN insider recently suggested that most expect a split could eventually happen.
  2. Meanwhile, the Bucks are focused on making a move at the trade deadline, even with limited assets, in hopes of giving Giannis a final opportunity to win in Milwaukee.

Giannis expressed to The Athletic that he wouldn’t ask for a trade, but if he declines the Bucks’ contract extension this summer, it could lead to his departure. That would push Milwaukee to consider trading him for value while they still can.

This injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for both Giannis and the Bucks, and it could significantly influence the upcoming trade deadline scenarios.

Giannis is unlikely to be traded by the deadline

I didn’t believe Giannis would be traded at the deadline anyway, but this injury probably seals the deal. He’s expected back in late February or early March, but any team that trades for him would likely be cautious about rushing his return. Plus, his unique skill set makes it tough for teams to adapt their strategies on short notice, especially if he’s not fully fit. It looks like his chances of being traded this season have diminished significantly.

The Bucks should consider tanking instead of making moves

Trade rumors involving the Bucks have mentioned players like Ja Morant and Zach LaVine, but they might want to rethink that strategy. Milwaukee could be in a position to secure a higher pick in the draft, which could be beneficial. With the Pelicans looking like they may struggle this season, having both their pick and Milwaukee’s could provide an opportunity to draft strong young talent. Currently, the Bucks and Pelicans’ positions in the lottery could be advantageous for Milwaukee. With Giannis sidelined, Milwaukee might slip further in standings, making it more appealing to tank for improved draft prospects.

Miami is waiting on the sidelines

The Miami Heat are in a prime position to potentially go after Giannis if the Bucks decide to entertain offers. Currently sitting as the No. 8 seed in the East at 23-22, they may prefer to hold onto their future first-round pick rather than making a risky move for someone like Morant, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Giannis’ situation. While they might make smaller trades, maintaining their best assets could be key for a Giannis pursuit this summer. I suspect Miami’s trade deadline will be fairly quiet.

Knicks should focus on current roster

The Knicks have been facing challenges after their NBA Cup performance, and there’s buzz about a possible trade involving Karl-Anthony Towns given New York’s urgency to win now. Personally, I think the Knicks would be a great fit for Giannis if he were traded, but Towns might be essential to matching contracts in any deal. It seems unlikely they would trade him during the season, especially since Giannis probably won’t be moving before the deadline. New York’s best strategy might be to aim for a successful season before reconsidering their approach toward Giannis in the summer.

Warriors can’t afford to wait

There’s talk that the Golden State Warriors want to pursue both Giannis and LeBron James this summer. However, they can’t just sit back and let this season slip by while hoping for Giannis. With Stephen Curry still performing at a high level, they need to act now rather than waiting around. The injury to Jimmy Butler has hit Golden State hard, and a move that bolsters their chances now might be necessary. I mean, acquiring talents like Michael Porter Jr. or Domantas Sabonis could help. It’s a tricky situation; if they do secure Giannis later, it’ll be an interesting reflection on their current choices.
