Bruce Blakeman promises to stop Mamdani's socialist plans for NYC and criticizes Hochul for supporting them.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who might run for governor in New York as a Republican, took aim at Governor Hochul’s approach, arguing that her policies are driving New Yorkers out and failing to address the increasing cost of living and crime. Blakeman, 70, shared his thoughts in various interviews, claiming Hochul has aligned herself with New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s socialist policies. He echoed the sentiments of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) about the upcoming 2026 gubernatorial election being a critical moment for New York, suggesting that it’s an “existential battle” against socialism. If elected, Blakeman promised to act decisively to counter any detrimental policies from Mamdani that he believes harm the economy or undermine law enforcement.

Q: After Governor Hochul’s State of the State address, she seemed to overlook New York’s affordability and crime issues. What steps would you take to remedy this?

Answer: My plan includes cutting taxes, investing in economic development, and eliminating unnecessary regulations that stifle business growth in New York. The goal is to foster an environment where prosperity can thrive, leading to higher wages and better benefits. This approach would make life more affordable and give people more freedom in how they spend their money. On the crime front, I have a proven record of supporting law enforcement, hiring more police and correctional officers, and ending sanctuary state policies that, in my view, compromise safety. The current situation diverts billions in tax dollars to those who are here illegally. We need to prioritize New Yorkers and focus on improving their quality of life. Hochul promises change every year but falls short.

Q: What are your thoughts on cashless bail and congestion pricing?

Answer: One of my initial actions as governor would be to abolish cashless bail, which I see as a failure impacting repeat offenders. We need consequences in place. The “raise the age” law has also been problematic and requires revision. As for congestion pricing, that’s simply a middle-class tax, and I would work to eliminate it.

Q: Regarding Mayor Mamdani, have you discussed your campaign with President Trump? How much support do you anticipate from him?

Answer: While I didn’t go into specifics about my conversation with Trump last week, he did wish me luck. It’s difficult to quantify the support I expect, but I discussed my policy views with him, and I believe my common-sense approach will resonate with a wide range of constituents.

Q: What’s your take on Hochul’s assertion that the Trump administration acted unlawfully concerning Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduro?

Answer: I think it’s crucial to protect our children from drug addiction and those who exacerbate that issue should be commended, not criticized. The policies Hochul supports, such as cashless bail and sanctuary states, lean towards being pro-crime, and her defense of figures like Maduro shows her disconnect with reality.

Q: What do you think about Hochul’s bill allowing lawsuits against ICE agents?

Answer: It seems that both Hochul and Mayor Mamdani are undermining the federal law enforcement efforts. Instead of demonizing those upholding the law, we should be supporting their mission.

Q: Have you been surprised by the political decisions of your colleagues, such as Rep. Stefanik?

Answer: When she withdrew from the gubernatorial race, I understood her reasons. I believe her focus on family is valid, and I trust that her motivations were genuine.

Q: Do you think there’s any likelihood that Stefanik will endorse your campaign?

Answer: I have confidence that she, as a committed Republican, would favor my candidacy over Hochul’s.

Q: How do you view Trump’s openness to working with Mayor Mamdani?

Answer: I respect Trump’s style of open communication with all kinds of individuals. It’s worked for him in many respects, and I believe it’s important to keep those lines of dialogue open.

Q: If elected, how will you handle Mayor Mamdani’s policies?

Answer: I’ve been clear that I will take action if he undermines the economy or law enforcement within the city.

Q: What kind of support do you anticipate from national Republicans?

Answer: I think my approach to governance will attract not just strong Republican backing but also moderate Democrats and independents. My record speaks to my commitment to making communities safer and more prosperous, an area Hochul has failed in.

Q: Do you see a need for more ICE enforcement in New York?

Answer: Yes, I believe ICE should operate in communities where dangerous, undocumented individuals reside, ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens.

Q: How do you feel about the Long Island Railroad’s union contract negotiations? Are you concerned about potential strikes?

Answer: The negotiations, which are currently paused, warrant careful observation. I believe in competent and satisfied workers, and the situation under Hochul’s leadership hasn’t fostered that.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?

Answer: I’m an Islanders fan, and I also support the Knicks. I grew up a Nets fan too, but the Knicks have been my long-term loyalty. When it comes to baseball, I root for the Yankees. As for football, I prefer college football, but I’d lean towards the Buffalo Bills, with the Giants and Jets following.

Q: What do you view as key issues for New Yorkers that you intend to tackle if elected?

Answer: New York has the highest tax rates in the country, which drives businesses and residents away. Hochul’s administration has focused on raising taxes and implementing congestion pricing, conflicting with her claims of wanting to make the state more affordable. She has overseen high costs, high premiums, and significant regulations that hinder job growth and economic prosperity. Under her watch, the affordability issue remains unresolved.
