Pittsburgh Steelers Set to Hire Mike McCarthy as Head Coach

The Pittsburgh Steelers have taken their time in finding their next head coach, much like the previous three teams in a similar situation. It appears that Mike McCarthy is the leading candidate to fill the role following Mike Tomlin’s retirement after 19 seasons earlier this month.

McCarthy, who coached the Dallas Cowboys for five seasons before taking a break in 2025 after being let go, is best known for his 13-year tenure with the Green Bay Packers. There, he coached Aaron Rodgers and led the team to a Super Bowl victory during the 2010 season. During his time in Green Bay, McCarthy secured six NFC North titles and made the playoffs eight consecutive years, which is quite impressive.

It’s interesting to consider the possibility that this move might entice Rodgers to come back to Pittsburgh for another season. Rodgers, now a free agent, had success with the Steelers, who made the playoffs for the first time since 2021.

After a disappointing exit in the wild-card round, Rodgers was asked about his future. He responded thoughtfully, saying, “I’m not going to make an emotional decision.” Reflecting on the past year, he acknowledged, “Of course, there was a lot of adversity, but it was a lot of fun.” At one point, he had hinted that he was “pretty sure” the 2025 season would be his last, yet it seems he might be open to the idea of playing a 22nd season in the NFL.

If McCarthy indeed takes over as head coach, it could potentially raise the stakes for Rodgers’ return, making things a bit more exciting for Steelers fans.
