Men Concerned About Fertility Are Changing Underwear Choices

More men are reconsidering their underwear options amid rising worries about fertility and hormonal health. This trend is gaining traction online, as many are opting for cotton, wool, and organic materials instead of synthetic options like polyester.

These men are increasingly avoiding synthetic fibers, driven by concerns over microplastics, “forever chemicals,” and their possible links to infertility.

Recent findings indicate that microplastics are widespread in our environment, including air, water, and food, and they might transport pollutants into human organs. Such exposure has been associated with health issues like cancer, inflammation, and cardiovascular problems.

Social media conversations and podcasts are playing a significant role in this movement, with a plethora of organic men’s underwear brands popping up and gaining popularity.

Dr. Paul Turek, a reproductive urologist from California, mentioned that microplastics are an ongoing topic of discussion. He advises his patients to minimize plastic exposure but notes that there isn’t yet enough research to back these concerns thoroughly.

Dr. Jamie Knopman, who specializes in fertility preservation, stated that while wearing tighter briefs could theoretically impact fertility, it’s not solely due to the material itself. “Although underwear changes might help improve fertility, it’s rarely the only cause of infertility,” she explained, pointing out that tightness can increase testicular temperature, negatively influencing sperm quality and quantity. However, she has not observed a direct correlation between wearing specific styles and fertility outcomes.

Dr. Alex Robles of the Columbia University Fertility Center echoed this sentiment, stating there’s no compelling evidence linking any particular fabric to male fertility issues. He did acknowledge that elevated scrotal temperatures—whether from tight clothing or prolonged heat exposure—are associated with reduced semen quality.

Taking Steps to Improve Fertility

For men with abnormal semen test results, Knopman often recommends lifestyle changes involving sleep, diet, and exercise alongside consulting a urologist to enhance sperm health.

She emphasizes that while altering underwear might be beneficial, pinpointing it as the sole reason behind fertility issues is nearly impossible. She believes that fertility shouldn’t just be viewed as a female concern, as lifestyle modifications are equally relevant for men.

If a male patient reports spending long hours biking or soaking in hot baths, Knopman advises him to reconsider those habits. While they may not directly cause fertility issues, altering such lifestyles can only be advantageous.

Robles encourages men to choose comfortable underwear that doesn’t constrict, avoid high heat exposure, diversify their diets, and limit exposure to toxins such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake. “Age, obesity, smoking, and environmental toxins are the most significant contributors to declining male fertility,” he said, urging those facing infertility struggles to consult a specialist.
