New Yorkers who love snow find inventive ways to use their sleds before a big winter storm.

As Winter Storm Fern approaches by Sunday, New Yorkers are noticing a significant shortage of sleds, prompting many to think outside the box for alternatives.

With predictions of up to a foot of snow across the city by Monday, the usual plastic sleds have become hot commodities, flying off the shelves and disappearing from online retailers.

If you’re fortunate, you might still snag one of these sought-after sleds. Basic plastic models are priced around $15 at local hardware stores, while sturdier versions can be found on Amazon ranging from $40 to $85.

In the Upper West Side, one frantic New Yorker made a desperate post asking his neighbors for sled recommendations—expressing how “stressed out” he felt without one, implying that surviving the snowstorm would be difficult without a sled.

Responses poured in, revealing the collective frustration of many, as popular stores were entirely out of sleds. Amazon deliveries were also projected to be delayed until late next week, prompting some to propose creative alternatives for enjoying the impending snow.

Ideas included the nostalgic approach of “borrowing” lunch trays from schools or fast-food places like McDonald’s. A few commenters even mentioned the possibility of snagging a tray from Katz’s Delicatessen—though, they noted, securing one now might be tough due to a guard at the entrance.

Others suggested cardboard boxes would do just fine as a makeshift sled, or even borrowing the lid of a trash can for some impromptu fun.

As winter enthusiasts prepare to hit the snowy hills in parks throughout the five boroughs—whether on legitimate sleds or DIY creations—there’s also a sledding competition in Central Park on Sunday at 3 p.m., offering a $50 cash prize for those looking for a bit of thrill.
